Long Live Roe
2022, 101.5 x 152.5cm, acrylics on canvas, 1 of 1.
As part of the ‘Long Live Roe’ series.
This series is Lutgen's interpretation of the infamous Roe v Wade overturn on June 24th 2022. Lutgen painted this piece during her artist residency at Soho House, London.
The painting captures a whirlwind of emotions from rage, disappointment, sadness and disbelief. Lutgen plays with texture in the background and immediate shadows around the figure, signalling chaos and despair. The perfectly outlined and shaded figure, in contrast, portrays the well-oiled machine that we know as patriarchy. The fist is that of a man, giving all of womanhood a massive "fuck you", whilst still dictating reproductive rights and unrealistic beauty ideals; hence the crassly exaggerated breasts, a la Baywatch, and tucked back arms.
